Jongmyo Shrine, the Parthenon of Korea

This is my favorite traditional Korean building in my city Seoul.
Jongmyo(1394~) is the temple for all Kings and Queens of the 'Kingdom of Josun(1392~1897)' and also Emperors of the 'Korean Empire(1897~1910)'. It is also one of UNESCO World Heritages in Korea.

Jongmyo has two inner temples, the main temple is Jungjun and the other one is Yungnyungjun(it's a bit hard to pronounce even for me). Jungjun has total 19 rooms for 19 Kings and 30 Queens, and Yungnyungjun is for rest 15 Kings and 17 Queens.

The main temple Jungjun has characteristic architectural form of Korea. When it was built first, it has much less rooms because it is not expected how many Kings will be ancestral rited. And then, more rooms are added at the side of Jungjun. Rather than to built new buildings for rooms, they made it longer and longer horizontally.
Result of it, Jungjun looks horizontally broad, low, calm and even grandeur enough for the main purpose of this building.

The ancestral rites in Jongmyo is still being held in nowadays.
